Songs of slow Burning Earth (OmdU)

Landschaften, gelegentliche Gespräche und Begegnungen sowie Töne, die mal präsent, mal verschwunden sind, bilden SONGS OF SLOW BURNING EARTH. Über zwei Jahre in unterschiedlicher Nähe zur Front aufgenommen, zeichnet das audiovisuelle Tagebuch die subtilen Veränderungen der ukrainischen Gesellschaft im Ab- grund des totalen Krieges nach. Die rauen Akkorde von Panik und Schrecken in den ersten Wochen der russischen Invasion verwandeln sich allmählich in die stumpfe Ruhe der Akzeptanz von Tod und Zerstörung, die schließlich für die lokale Bevölkerung zur tragischen Normalität wird – für den Rest der Welt aber nur eine Randnotiz. Vor dem Hintergrund der (meta)physischen Land- schaft kollektiver Katastrophe strebt eine neue Generation von Ukrainer:innen danach, sich eine Zukunft vorzustellen.

Landscapes, occasional conversations and encounters, and sounds that weave in and out of the frame compose SONGS OF SLOW BURNING EARTH. Captured in varying proximities to the frontline over two years, the audiovisual diary of Ukraine’s immersion into the abyss of total war traces the subtle changes in Ukrainian so- ciety. The ragged chords of panic and horror of the first weeks of the Russian invasion slowly morph into the numb stillness of the acceptance of death and destruction, which eventually becomes the tragic normality for the local population, but just an afterthought for the rest of the world. Against the backdrop of the (meta)physical landscape of collective disaster, a new generation of Ukrainians as- pires to imagine the future.
